In the simplest definition, KVM is the acronym for Keyboard, Video and Mouse, and is a type of switching box made up of electronic switches that allow just one person to have control over more than one computer, all from a single keyboard, monitor and mouse. This device is called a kvm switch.Consider for a moment the possibility of a small business that has several aspects that need to be tended by a computer. There could be a need for one computer to handle all of the video surveillance cameras. Another machine might be needed to handle nothing else but Payroll. And, then another computer that handles all of the company server needs. In this case, one person could be at the only desk and operate all three from a single keyboard, monitor and mouse. In reverse, these switches can be used when a single home computer is needed to handle a home office, and a home theater system, but with two keyboards, two monitors and two mice.
In this case, the two location's are usually close together and very similar to a mall location kiosk where staff members each need input devices, but to the same computer. Although this is not the most common use of these switches, it is a good example. Most data centers have many racks of servers installed and rather than hiring an employee for each server the use of kvm switches provides a mean's of only one employee being able to manage all of the racks. Therefore, maintaining and monitoring these server configuration's is much more cost effective and makes it more possible for businesses to afford to provide their services. When these were first invented, they were passive devices that consisted of multi-pole switches which provided a cheap method of coupling computers together and many of them are still in use.
